Thing # 9

I bacame a Merlin member. This really was the toughest Week for me, so much so that I skipped it and came back. I explored Merlin and Feedster and found some more news feeds of interest. I was able to find several blogposts about my news story of the day which was about Oscar the deathcat.

Thing 6 again

This should speak for itself, hope it works

23rd Thing

I'll start out with the negative thoughts first- I always considered myself a somewhat tech-savvy person and a quick learner. 23 Things made me feel stupid!! I found I was often inpatient when I couldn't get things to work the way I wanted them to work. However, on the other hand, I really liked finding out about how much stuff is out there for the taking. I really enjoyed playing around in Flickr and YouTube. I thought the online productivity tools were a very useful thing as an employee and team member needing to communicate with other employees. Overall, it gave me a real sense of how much libraries will be changing as we go forward, even if I can't fathom yet what that will look like. While I may not be able to explain much of what I learned about to someone else, I at least have a sense of what is meant by much of the terminology that surrounds us constantly on the news and at work and in our daily lives. I think I would be very likely to participate if something similar came along.

ebooks

In spite of the fact that I knew we had ebooks available for reserving and checking out, I did not know that some titles can also be burned to a cd. I went to our homepage, created an account and reserved a copy of a title that I can burn to a cd when available. Very interesting!

podcasts

I had a little trouble adding the RSS feed for Sirsidynix to my bloglines account, but eventually succeeded. YEAA!!! Having used many podcasts in the process of accomplishing 23 things, feeling pretty confident that I understand their usefulness.

you tube

As a mom of a teenager, here was some technology I was actually familiar with beforehand:) Wouldn't it be great to create a little video for new customers explaining our services, etc. and have it be part of the registration process. We could be sure that everyone was made aware of the wonderful opportunities and policies at CCPL.

This is how we feel some days!

Week 8

I posted by google doc to my blog and had some fun exploring some of the web 2.0 winners. It is absolutely mind boggling to see all the things available. It really makes me wonder how people 200 years from now will look back on these times. The online productivity "things"could be an especially useful tool for some work that we do here at the library. I can see teams sharing the work on documents without having to email and download, etc.
This is my example of creating a document using google docs. This is a really really cool thing to know about.

sandbox

Not sure that link should be there, but since I'm "playing in the sandbox", I thought I'd post it and see. The mind boggles at the ways in which we can get info off of the internet and how many "coworkers" we now really have. Okay, I got an error message, so, no that link should not have been there:)

wiki, wiki, wiki

Cool, now I know why wikipedia should be read with a grain of salt. Found some great ways to see what other library systems are doing for summer reading and a great resource for checking what others thought of books they've read.

thing 15 web 2.0

I liked this thing, especially the podcast by Michael Wesch. Up until this point, I wasn't quite sure what Web 2.0 meant and how exactly it pertained to us. Looking through some of the links such as the one on Wikipedia, though, gave me some insight on how libraries will be changing over the next few years.

Technorati

Okay, I may not really understand this tagging business, but somehow through many clicks and missteps, I found something by Christina K. on technorati. I need to do some extra credit reading and questioning before I totally get this.

tagging

Okay, I'll admit this one has me a bit stumped. I'm not sure I understand the whole concept of tagging. I'm thinking that you personalize your web browser's taskbar for your interests and needs and then can work with that regardless of which computer you are working from. I can certainly imagine that it would be useful for some people.

rollyo

Each week, I keep getting smarter and smarter. This is a terrific way of becoming aware of just some of the possibilities out there. I can see where people in certain professions would love rollyo as a way of keeping up on the latest trends in their field.

library thing

LibraryThing may be my favorite "thing" yet. I read so much and can never remember a single title even a week later. To have such a nice list to refer to and to be able to refer friends to is fantastic. Now if only there was enough time to enter and organize everything.

on line generators

This week I created a Meez and had great fun with the different generators. I especially liked the sketch generator. It would be great for creating a very personalized coloring book for a young person (or not so young).

bloglines

While I'm pretty sure I understand the gist of RSS feeds, I'm not sure I get the whole picture of their usefulness. I think it might be because I'm not in the habit of checking any blogs or news sites on a regular basis. I did find it very interesting.

my favorite technology (for this week)

My daughter's IPOD wins this week. As she was playing her newest download through my car stereo using a cassette with a cord, I realized she was playing a song that I originally owned on 8 track. We sure have come a long way!

Thing 6

Today, I finished my explorations of Flickr. WOW!! By far, my favorite features were the maps. I zeroed in on a little town in southwestern England, and could have sworn I saw a picture of our aunt buying produce. Also, created a silly trading card and will be posting that here soon...maybe.

Day One

Today I learned the 7 1/2 habits of lifelong learners. My favorite was 7 1/2 which was playing. Playing is important for good mental health and good mental health is very helpful in learning. My least favorite was #3 which was view problems as challenges. I'd prefer just not having any problems.
